Product Description
The BRIO Adventure Tunnel is a fantastic accessory that will make the wooden train sets even more fun. Shaped and coloured like an Alpine tunnel, the sturdy plastic tunnel has a realistic stone-effect surface and flowers. Open at both ends under brick-effect arches, with BRIO track passing through it, the tunnel interlocks easily with other BRIO sets. But the real appeal of the tunnel only becomes apparent once the 2 x AA batteries required (not included) have been fitted in the safely concealed cavity underneath. (A screwdriver will be required to open and close this). Just push the button, or pass a BRIO train equipped with the necessary magnet through the tunnel, and one of four adventure sounds will bring the tunnel magically to life. A very loud "toot toot" may follow or the echoing sound of a train rushing through a tunnel, or even sounds of people at work inside. Beware, however, though the noises turn themselves off (the longest lasts for around 7-10 seconds) they are very loud. Children will love this feature for realistic play, but for less enthusiastic parents there is an "off" switch. The tunnel also has a flip-up bridge across its top for use with the BRIO people (sold separately). All in all, this adventure tunnel is a novel, lively toy that children really love. It certainly adds another dimension to the traditional train set format and will soon become a favourite addition to your little station master's kit. --Lucie Naylor

Kids love it, 31 Dec 2007
My girl is 3yrs old and got her Brio train set for Christmas together with Thomas and Molly. The highlight however is this tunnel! All the other kids that visit (as well as my girl) just love it. Can't see the educational value really - just great fun!
Brilliant tunnel, 06 May 2005
My son was given this for his first birthday, he is now 4 and has a 2 year old brother. It is constantly out with the rest of the Brio. It is great, it is tough, it is loud. A number of his friends now also have the tunnel! My only complaint is that it seems to go off at the key moment in the tv programme and drowns out all the sounds. Brio also have fantastic customer service. Three cheets for Brio!
BRIO quality with bells and whistles!, 21 Nov 2001
My son saw this at a friend and nagged me to get him one. I must admit that it's given his train set a new lease of life as he plays with it at least once a week. It's one of the best accessories I've bought. It's got lots of different sounds and makes the train set more fun to play with. I would have given it 5 stars, but I was surprised it was made in plastic and brio are famous for wooden toys. Even so, it's very good quality plastic and still looks new after 8 months! Good value.

We got this as a gift for our son a year ago, and its appeal has endured. Older and younger children who come to play also love it. They play rescue with a variety of story lines. The toy shows no hints of breaking or wearing out yet, and I see no end to the imaginative ways it can be played with. Highly recommended to fans of wooden railway.

Product Description
The Mighty Red Action Locomotive is a battery-powered engine full of great features. This plastic engine is bigger than most BRIO trains at approximately 13 cm long and has eight wheels for super power. A switch on the top allows the engine to be used in both free wheel and battery-powered play. There are three buttons on the top, the first activates reverse motion, bell, reverse sound and rear flashing light, the second stops everything and the third activates forward motion, headlights and authentic steam engine sound. It has magnetic coupling for pulling trucks and coaches and rubber grips on the wheels for extra pulling strength. Recommended for aged three and up. Requires two AAA, 1.5v Batteries (Not Included) --Victoria Mackenzie

Well if the battery cover worked it would be great, 01 Apr 2008
Both of our sons love their Brio trains and track and so we thought we would buy a second battery train so the youngest could enjoy one. The other train (BRIO 33761 Wooden Railway System: Smart Track Engine) worked very well, was well designed and durable.
This train, however, has a flaw - the battery cover on the first train had a locating pin to stop the cover sliding forward and make it secure when it was screwed down into place. This one does not and as a result my wife cannot fit it at all and I have spent half an hour getting it to work. I take this type of equipment apart and put it back together again for a living and I can't do with this model what comes naturally with the earlier one!
Bad show Brio!
Could be better, 29 Nov 2007
Great features with the realistic sound and forward and back battery operation but very disappointing that it cant even make it over it's own manufacturer's bridges even with nothing attached! Shame as it should be better performing for the price. It is still a hit with the children but 'Thomas the Tank Engine' battery train out performs it.
A nice addition!, 30 Dec 2002
When we first got this through the post, we thought that it was a pretty small package for £15. However, it has become the centerpiece of our existing BRIO set! The lights and sounds keep our 2-year-old enthralled and he loves pushing the buttons to make it go. Coupled with the stop-and-start track we already have, it makes for a busy time for our toddler. The free-play switch is great as it allows the engine to be pushed around without worry about damage to the electric motor.
Definitely mighty..., 23 Sep 2002
Much better than the other battery-operated engine (that came with our first starter set). That had a fiddly switch at the top whereas this has simple big buttons for forward, reverse and stop (much better for our two year old!). It even has a switch to change into push-along mode and has little trouble coping with slopes and longer trains (unlike UK rail companies my daughter likes nothing better than to load on the carriages!). Be aware you'll need two (AAA) batteries but this just makes it stronger and last longer.
Amazing, 16 Sep 2001
The BRIO Wooden Railway System - Mighty Red Action Loco is the third toy in this series and after the second purchace there was no complanting when my little boy asked for it I wen't staight and got it, only to find that this was an even better purcase than the other one. The amount of time that my son spent on it was astronomical. I highly recommed this product to any child between the ages 5-9

Disappointed, 12 Nov 2008
My 2 year old loves this but gets very frustrated by the engine which isn't powerful enough to get over the bridge, even when not pulling anything. On the level, it strugles to get along with trucks in tow. This is with brand new batteries.
Are all Brio locos this underpowered?
Perfect trainset for a perfect little man!, 03 Feb 2006
My son recieved this trainset as a Christmas gift. It is Great! Daddy usually takes over and then he struggles to get a look in! The quality is excellent and will just keep on going. Well worth a purchase.

Great fun, 08 Nov 2003
Great fun the only problem was who was going to control the train. So we bought another!
Exactly what it says on the box, 23 Sep 2007
This is a fantastic addition to anyone's Brio wooden railway set, the free wheeling feature is good for when you don't have a spare battery to hand!
And I could find no fault what so ever with the description contained on this page! It is matches exactly!
battery powered thomas, 14 Dec 2006
this item is not properly advertised i bought this item for my neice for christmas thinking it was great getting thomas and track for £[...] infact all i actually recived for my money was the battery powered thomas and one peice of track was not impressed at all.
Poor Quality, 13 Oct 2008
We bought a few of these trains for our three years old as he is a Thomas fan and completely obsessed. I thought I was investing in a quality toy that would give him pleasure for some time.
Whilst one year on, he still loves playing with Henry, Gordon and Thomas, I'm very disappointed by the quality. All the trains have become very chipped. The paint peels off incredibly easily. They also do not ride round the track very smoothly and when he connects them all together to make a long train they quickly derail. He's recently played with his freinds Brio set which seems to be much better quality.
Terrible quality...what a shame., 26 Nov 2001
We were so disappointed when Brio stopped making the Thomas trains. The quality with these trains is the absolute worst. We used to live in England and the Brio-made Thomas trains were far superior to the American-style Learning Curve or Flair trains. The paint chips quite easily and the trains look terrible. The track is an inferior wood too. What a shame.

Good value.
Years of fun!, 05 Nov 2006
We got this as a gift for our son a year ago, and its appeal has endured. Older and younger children who come to play also love it. They play rescue with a variety of story lines. The toy shows no hints of breaking or wearing out yet, and I see no end to the imaginative ways it can be played with. Highly recommended to fans of wooden railway.
My 2 year old grandson loves this but gets very frustrated by the little engine which doesn't have enough power to get itself over the bridge without a push. On the level, it can just about pull the three trucks along, if it has a fresh battery.
It's a pity because I'd like to expand the system but, if the trains can't get round unaided, there's little point.
Great first train set, 10 Mar 2008
Although most Brio is not recommended for children younger than 3 years old, this set is designated as being OK from 18 months old up. We bought it for our son's second birthday, and he absolutely adores it. The pieces all seem very robust, and there is relatively limited scope for him to do much damage with the pieces if he throws a tantrum. For instance the house is made of a soft material. Learning how to run the train on and off the tracks, keep it on the track, run it through the house and use the right magnet on each carriage to connect to the others has proved to be an absorbing exercise in physical and mental dexterity. Apart from the elegant simplicity of the tracks itself, all the pieces are brightly coloured with familiar fruits on the side of the carriages.
Of course, the real beauty of this system is that you can carry on adding track, rolling stock and accessories as the child gets older. Talking of the track, despite it seeming to be a relatively straightforward piece of construction, we have found that other makes of Brio-like track are of noticeably poorer manufacture and in some cases (such as that from Ikea) do not interconnect well. You may well pay more for the Brio brand name, but judging by the quality of this set, it is probably worth the extra.

Does not run for long, 11 Dec 2007
I have had three of these trains. The first time the kids played with it a bit over five months and then it stopped. Replaced all batteries. Took ages to get remember to get another. That died within two weeks - replaced all batteries to no avail (and I know there are two on the front of the train). Was given a replacement from the shop and that has gone in under a week and the kids have played with it twice. This time I'm sending it back to Brio (who are very helpful). A friend has one and that has lasted 6 months on the same batteries. Unlucky? Jinxed? When it works it's great but keep the receipt!
Good, 05 Oct 2007
Got this for my Dad as he wants to be a train driver, cause and effect etc, and first ride he stuffs it through a level crossing when the barriers were down and with cars on the track, then straight through the station decapitating the wooden fat controller. I'm telling Mum and Virgin trains!
Has to be used with the remote, 08 May 2007
Got the toy for my disabled son, as hoping to develop cause and effect, and use of remote (with a view to motorised wheelchair use later on). Very much enjoyed, although it struggled to get up the train set hills / over bridges etc. When batteries ran down, my nephew tried to play with it by pushing it along, which has stripped the gears so will only go in reverse now. Good toy but needs to be used with the remote therefore.
