Hours of fun, 20 Nov 2008
Helicopters are inherently difficult to fly. Silverlit has made things a lot simpler to give you hours of fun. As you might expect you cannot do all the manoeuvres a normal helicopter could do. The helicopter stays flat most of the time and turning is controlled easily but a dedicated switch on the remote.
The durability of this product is phenomenal. After many hard landings at the early stages of the learning curve it's still working and behaving like new. For the price, you might as well buy one even if you 're not a big fan of the genre.
Fun, but it'll break, 17 Nov 2008
Now I know that no one will read this and there will be a millon sold by January, but they're very very easy to break! I had mine for just 3 days, i din't crash it....much, I was just hovering about in the lounge when it began spinning uncontrolably. I had a look at it and found that the tail had come slightly loose and was wobbly. Therefore, I recommend buying the dual-rotor model which might.....might get rid of the problem. I gave it a 2 for educational values because it takes some doing to master this thing! Happy flying!

fun, challenging and fragile!, 14 Nov 2008
I bought a twin pack of these helicopters for my son last Christmas. At first they were great fun, and actually rather challenging even for adults to control. However, if crashed at the "wrong" angle (and believe me - you WILL crash them) the small downward pointing section at the end of the tail breaks.
Both of my son's helicopters have broken tails and will no longer fly properly. The part is so small it can't be fixed even with super glue.
They are too light to fly outdoors (we got one stuck in the neighbours tree!) and you need a large space to fly them indoors. They move so quickly when on a full charge that in a small room they crash into the walls or ceiling almost straight away. As the charge runs down they get easier to manouvre, and with a lot of practice my son learned to fly them well (though I never did!).
Fantastic! Easy to control, Durable and Lightweight!, 25 Oct 2008
This was definitely the best buy ive ever made. The price is amazing for what you get. I would highly recommend this for any children between 8 and 14 :)
Simply amazing!, 12 Oct 2008
The picooz is the most fun i've had in ages. I bought it knowing it was good and it is. Its great value for money and when they say its durable they mean it. It only takes a few flights to learn what your doing. However read the instrutions and make sure to trim. If youre going to buy it for a kid make sure there mature enough. The design is great it has a built in LED (light) so you can have night flights. If yout going to fly it outdoors make sure there is no wind or direct sun. A brilliant buy reccomended!!!

No staying power, 14 May 2008
A great idea, and it was huge fun for about 2 weeks. BUT then the tail rotor needed replacing and in the removal and refitiing procedure suddenly it didn't rotate at all. So one helicopter down... The next one lasted about a month longer. I don't think that's value for money. Toys like scaletrix and lego still work after 20 years!
Very Cool!, 04 Mar 2008
These two helicopters are brilliant i stood on one the day after i recieved them, and to be honest i found it increadably easy to fix. after straightening the roter axl and putting the thing back together i could barely tell the difference. mine are still going now even 3 and a half months later, tho i cant help but wander if i should move on to an X gyrator or a 3 channel... i would however rate the single one of these as they are a little easyer to control, and do not waight them until you have got to grips with them!

This is so much fun. I was unsure how durable the copters would be, but my fears were ungrounded, since they survived Christmas and New Year with only superficial damage. The laser zapping element adds to the delight, and is definitely worth the extra money. For indoor use only, because even on the calmest days they soars away, outside.
I would definitely recommend this for young and old alike.
Another Christmas toy washout, 28 Dec 2007
I bought the Silverlit Picoo Z Sky Challenger with the laser action so my 13 year old son and I could play together on Christmas day, unfortunately the tail rota on one of the helicopters is intermittent and therefore crashes after reaching about 3 feet in the air. The other helicopter works fine and guess what, that was my sons! We have been unable to battle as planned. Let's hope Amazon will replace the offending toy.
this is a winner, 07 Dec 2007
I was a little sceptical about how much fun this would be and whether these coptors really fly. No worries. They are amazing and even my wife's raised eyebrows quickly turned to a smile. My 2 girls think they are 'cool' Even the 8 year old could fly one within a few minutes.
The flying time is as short it suggests but still enough time to enjoy it. It says don't use rechargeable batteries but I seem to remember another website saying that you can safely ignore these warnings.
It will be interesting to see how durable these coptors are - you get spare rear blades. I haven't had long enough to know.
If you aren't convinced whether this is worth the money check out the video that is on manufacturer's website.
Could be the toy of the year

6 out of 7 faulty! still, i really like it., 04 Oct 2008
although this is the best toy(flies forward yes-and its fast) i've ever had i must admit that out of the 7 pieces i received only 1 works perfectly. i originally ordered 2 and since then kept sending them back for replacement. i really thank amazon for their service. free shipping back!
-fault on 4: keeps spinning left!
-fault on 2: not flying forward!
i only got one which perfectly works.
by the way i still got a faulty one lying however i am actually embarrassed to send it back for replacement. but i guess i'll have to.
oh yes, the legs of of all the helicopters werent straight.
i guess that the series i got had a serious manufacturing fault. or is it just me?
still, if your one works trust me you'll have so much fun with it. flies forward yes. only a few low price helicopters can do that on the market. all the 2 channels are boring!
Huge fun, but slightly erratic, 04 Sep 2008
Technically very clever, this is an evolution of the tiny Picoo Z 2-channel machine that has taken the world by storm.
What they have added to this is a 'Forward' button that gives a surge of forwards movement to the otherwise very slowly moving helicopter.
But....
This surge forward comes after a slight but unpredictable delay, and the yaw control (left/right steering) on this machine is less good than on the Picoo Z.
So you might have this little machine hovering, and want to buzz it across the room, but it is twisting to the right, OK?
If you try to stop it twisting the sticky yaw control can set it spinning left, and the trim is not a lot of help in this - unlike the older Picoo Z. If you take pot luck and wait until it lines up on your destination, the forward button may delay enough until it aims you at the wall!
So it can be a bit of a lottery, but still great fun.
Fortunately it seems just as tough as the Picoo Z.
The tiny actuator mechanism for the 'Forward' control is jewel like and a very neat bit of model engineering, significant educational value, as always - but the way the whole machine flies is not so good in the ways described. Pity.
Oh, and it has a remote controlled light on it. Might add fun to the arrival of the Xmas pud? Just don't get too near the flames!
Still recommended, but for fun rather than precision flying.

Watch those shipping charges..., 29 Nov 2008
Well, I am waiting to see on this one - no doubt the replacements are good quality, but the e-tailer involved has put on a huge number of charges for shipping (£42.00 for shipping in the UK a multiple order to the same address!!! These are roter blades, very light, not bowling balls - I could get to London for less)- I do not yet know if it will be resolved, so be careful buying - if the situation is resolved to good effect, I promise to update this! If not, well - just be careful out there...
Not one, not two but THREE spare rotor blades!, 24 Jan 2008
My picoo z was still flying well with a cracked rear rotor blade but I knew one more nose-dive behind the sofa and my fun would be over. Unfortunately my
over enthusiasm after christmas day for tidying up meant the original spare went in the bin with cracker bits. Luckily these are official Silverlit rotors and a pack of three, which I was very happy about as I can play 'Apocolypse Now' to my heart's content.
How many, 26 Dec 2007
Surely it isn't £3 for one? How many rotors are there in this pack? Is it 3?

When I thought I'd cracked it after about an hour of flying, it veered into a curtain, smacked into the ground and one of the rotors partly snapped. There being no suitable spare parts, it is now totally out of control whenever I try to fly it. Having bought several Silverlit helicopters, all of which have broken in the first three days, I would not really recomend getting this unless you have a large flying area, are very experienced, have spare parts or enough money to buy another.

I'd been hanckering after a RC helicopter for a while, and one with at least 3 channels, and this fitted the bill on a special offer price of a little over 20 quid.

While the body is only polystyrene, its quite robust surviving many crashes into walls at hitting the ceiling. It does often just lose it's way and plummet without any obvoius reason.
Overall a good introduction to RC Helicopters.
Big Boys Toy, 26 Aug 2008
I bought this as a birthday present for my husband and have had great fun watching him trying to master the art of flying!! We've both been amazed at how the helicopter has stood up to the number of crash landings and bouncing off walls and ceilings. Now he's getting the hang of flying it's been quite interesting to see how the helicopter works and responds to the controls, such as hovering for instance.
Highly recommended; in fact, it looks like his work mates are starting to drop hints to partners ready for Christmas.....

These two helicopters are brilliant i stood on one the day after i recieved them, and to be honest i found it increadably easy to fix. after straightening the roter axl and putting the thing back together i could barely tell the difference. mine are still going now even 3 and a half months later, tho i cant help but wander if i should move on to an X gyrator or a 3 channel... i would however rate the single one of these as they are a little easyer to control, and do not waight them until you have got to grips with them!
future helicopter pilots - start here, 05 Jan 2008

Nice little flier, and great value, 28 Jun 2008
Got this because my PicooZ had long since died, and even though I've graduate since to a 4-channel co-axial, I missed the little guy. So, got this as a replacement, as I fancied something a little different looking.
As noted by another reviewer, you get no choice in which of the three infrared channels you will receive, which could cause problems if you want to use more than one at a time (is anyone at Amazon listening? Could we have a choice of the A,B or C versions, please?).
It flies great, better than my old PicooZ, but whether this is due to a better design, or simply that my original one got a bit mangled as I learnt, I have no idea: Maybe I had better buy a heli-style one as well, just for comparison purposes, of course (ahem!).
Comes with a spare tail rotor, which is very useful, and small weights, which can be applied to the nose, to increase forward speed (with 2-channel, there is no forward-reverse; only up-down and left-right spin).
Given how cheap these have now become, get one to play with if you've not bothered up until now: They will fly in a very small space, and will not damage anything you may hit. Outside is a no-no though, even a small breeze from an open window will put them off-course.
they lie!, 27 Mar 2008
The Helicopter itself is a great toy, but if you want to fly with friends I suggest you go to a proper shop as here you cannot select which channel you want.
'using infrared triband technology on 3 channels (A, B & C) three helicopters can be flown at the same time!'
Although the controller can be flipped between channels, the Insecta Helicopter is fixed to a preset one.
Therefore this statement is completely false, and the only reason why I would not recommend buying this product here.

Good at first, 21 Sep 2008
This was a birthday present, and was instantly a hit! However, on the first day of use the propeller blades started to loosen. Eventually it kept coming off every time it was used. We have tried to fix it ourselves but to no avail. This is a great shame as it would be a great little present for children and adults alike!
First helicopter - an early report, 18 Aug 2008
Right , Ive got a bit of time to write while the PicooZ charges up again so I thought I would write the sort of review I would like to read if I was contemplating buying one. If your not in for a longish read then i'll summaries it for you now in one sentence;
Yes, buy one but don't expect you'll be Mr/Mrs Airwolf from what is essentially a 2 channel toy that cost £20. With that in mind you can't go wrong.
For anyone else that wants more detail read on ....
first things first- some more flesh on the ratings ive given it:-
how much fun is this toy? - 5 stars. It's all relative of course but unless you have the attention span of a gnat , the co-ordination and reaction times of a sloth and just plain don't like the idea of flying your own model helicopter round the house (in which case what are you doing here?) - you'll love this little toy.
How would you rate this toys educational value? 5 stars. More than a few goes of this and your going to have a pretty good idea of what things 'like' lift and 'thrust' really mean. The significance of moving and static air and maybe even the influence of thermals, the value of patience and a whole load other vast if nebulous skills. Your kid will love you if you buy one and for £20 i'll amazed if it doesn't trounce Aunty Gertrude's selection of soft soaps as present number one year 200_ ( insert at will)
How durable is this toy? 3 stars. Could have been 5 because I haven't broken it yet despite managing to guide the thing into the top of a standard lamp shade and it clattering to silence against the bulb and lampshade struts (mercy!). However 3 not 5 because if you push it far enough or are plain unlucky - it WILL break. I guess ive just been lucky so far.
How do you rate this toy overall? 5 stars. I could gush on about it but lets just say i can't remember being as excited about opening a package since I was a kid. I wasn't wrong to be either.
OK now the main observations from a one day old pilot with 5 flights under his belt.
In no particular order...
* noise levels- makes less noise than a cordless handheld 9v vacuum cleaner and won't interfere with someone else watching telly unless you normally have the volume way down low.
*charge instruction - mine says that the green light will flash then go solid when it's charged. What actually happens is that a solid green light goes on and then goes OFF when it's charged. Yours may be different but if it's like mine - it's fine.
*The helicopter gets it's juice from the AA's in the remote. Switch the 'copter and remote off before plugging in then switch the remote on to feed power to the 'copter. This is not made explicit from the instructions. This may be obvious to many but i'm talking to my fellow luddites here.
* following on from the above - because it gets it's 'juice' from the AA's...expect to buy lots of AA's.
* yes, it's only two channels and you'll read many reviews that say it can't really fly properly forward. They're right to some extent but three points 1) when you get a little more experienced i'm sure adding some gentle weight to the nose will produce a better nose-down or forward pitch effect. Until then, stick with the aluminium stickers that come with it to start. They give just the slightest whiff of forward motion if you stack them on top of each other which is fine to start.2) this is a simple toy and for further down the line there is always the 3 channel Atlas of TandemZ as the next level. For about a fiver more - why not?3) hovering and just getting control of the thing may LOOK boring but I assure you that when the controls are in your hand just attaining a steady height and nose positon is enthralling.
*(Self edited section) I had initially suggested that I thought that the tail rotor was a simple free spinning blade- driven by the blast of air from the main rotor. Wrong- on closer examination there is the tinniest of motors driving it and connected to the main fuselage by a wire down the spine of the tail fin. As I said in the first draft - I think this rotor must contribute something to the stability of the flight by preventing the helicopter from tracking sideways.
Some final points on flying
* A literally breathless room is going to give you the best chance to get some control. Close the windows and doors. This thing weights 10 grammes which is mite less than my last sneeze. Give yourself a fighting chance.
* low flight is best if you've haven't ordered spares. Higher you fly, further you'll fall ...and more damage your likely to inflict. Sit down and keep it buzzing around knee height- just as much fun and will save a few bob until you become proficient.
* when full throttle (left controller in full 'UP' position )doesn't provide any further lift and increase blade rotation speed (the helicopters noise pitch is another clue) then you're no more that 20 seconds away from the end of the ride. Set it down. Make a cuppa.
* edit - extra trick - try and keep it away from walls if you can as Ive found that the blast of air created by the main rotor(or maybe it's the tail rotor) seems to bounce back on the helicopter and create stability and manouvering problems. If you need to 'ditch' at this point- cut the throttle off- a blade than is not spinning is less likely to break when it hits the floor.
everything else you need to know is covered in the other reviews
I hope this helps and that you have as much fun with it as I am
Picco Z - What a Toy, 20 Jun 2008
I was not even planning to buy this toy, let alone know about it in the first place... My work Colleague just mentioned about it and then i just watched a couple of youtube's and then the next thing im handing my credit card details to Amazon and the best part if im not buying one but 2 one for me and my colleague...
About the Picco Z itself... Well im pretty impressed with its durability because ive crashed it a million times already and except for the tail rotor everything has held up to what they say it will... But saying that i guess the people who make or sell this stuff know that the tail rotor will not survive the rigerous crashes so the spare rotor was a welcome smile...
U do need practice and a bit of modification like a paperclip on the nose to make it move forward and to give more stability and trust me once u are up and running u'll be impressed. The 10 min might sound too little but with the amount of effort u have to put in to control and fly this baby it feels like ur up for 30 min at least...
It is an indoors toy because even the slightest breeze can throw u off course and give the choper a mind of its own but hey on a good sunny day with no wind ur gold...
faster then then the normal pico's but comes with a price, 18 Apr 2008
faster and better then the normal pico z's but they don'nt take as much punishment. So just make sure you don't crash to much with this one as they can't take it. ive gone through 2 tail motors and a rotor.
Excellent !!, 10 Jan 2008
These little helicopters are excellent, i bought 3 as xmas pressie and have been asked lots of times 'where did you get that from, i'd love one!" my kids all have one as they can be flown on different frequencies, they are more robust then they look, would reccomend them to anyone for any age!

Customer Reviews

These two helicopters are brilliant i stood on one the day after i recieved them, and to be honest i found it increadably easy to fix. after straightening the roter axl and putting the thing back together i could barely tell the difference. mine are still going now even 3 and a half months later, tho i cant help but wander if i should move on to an X gyrator or a 3 channel... i would however rate the single one of these as they are a little easyer to control, and do not waight them until you have got to grips with them!
future helicopter pilots - start here, 05 Jan 2008
