My First Scalextric. A great toy, 17 Nov 2008
7 months ago I bought this Scalextric for my granddaughters, 4 yrs and 6 yrs old, to play with when they visit. It has been a great success. Visiting 6 to 10 year olds also loved it.
None of the children have problems putting the cars on the track themselves, partly due to the magnets that help hold the cars on the track. The cars go at incredible speeds (10 laps in 12 seconds). At full throttle they will fly off, but that is all part of the skill and fun - keeping them on the track so you win! My cars were not damaged when they came off but a couple of cushions strategically placed would make sure there was no damage. I have had no problems with cars being stopped by the track. One car developed a fault and Scalextrix replaced it free of charge.
At 1/64 scale it is half the size of normal Scalextric and very compact, 100cm x 50cm, and so does not eat up the space avialable.
It's important to follow the instructions about set up and do not let the children hold the cars when they are powered up (in an attempt to win!).
I myself have had great fun out of the set by making: two lap counters triggered by two infra red sensors under the bridge, an F1 style 5 light (LED) starter coupled to a £6 electronic stop/lap watch that times 10 or 20 lap races. All adds to the competative spirit.
My 1st Scalextric Set
Great fun and great value!, 16 Nov 2008
I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old son for Christmas. It is very quick and easy to assemble and he soon got to grips with the controls. One year later, after lots of play... especially when friends come round, it still provides lots of entertainment. We have never had any trouble whatsoever with the cars getting stuck and I can only acertain that the reviewers that have had, either had a faulty set or didn't assemble it firmly enough.
Not suitable for 3-5 year olds, 10 Nov 2008
I bought this for my 3 and 5 yr old boys (and secretly for me). Once we eventually got the cars going, they kept stopping as contact with track was poor, this was great fun. They do come off the track a lot at the start but boys soon got hang of it. One car kept stopping frustrating the life out of my 3yo then the small flimsy piece of plastic holding car to track broke off after only 2 days of play. Hardly a durable toy and left a dangerous small bit of plastic lying around on floor. If scalectrix are going to market this for younger children it needs to work first time and be more durable. I would avoid tantrums and frustration by avoiding this set.
Great Fun but..., 28 Oct 2008
When I set this up for my (almost) 3 year old, the cars kept coming off as per the other reviews. So I bought a new AC/DC adaptor which allows you to change the voltage to 12v(the adaptor I purchased had several fittings and 3v 6v 9v 12v settings). On a setting of twelve votes the cars still go very quick but they rarely fall off. The only thing that lets it down is sometimes the contacts need adjusting (making wider!). As this is a first scaletrix I am suprised Hornby hasn't come up with a switch!
Fun but disappointing!, 27 Feb 2008
When the track and cars are working well my 3 year old boy and 6 year old girl love it. But I have to say that I spend a great deal of time putting the cars back together. One car more than the other seems to come apart a bit too easily and then I have to keep spending time putting it back together. And then you have to get it just right or the cars won't go round the track properly. It comes with crash barriers that don't go on very easily and then come off and seem to hinder the cars. Yes the track does fit together quite easily but little boys like taking things apart and you can't let them do that or it will wreck the track. I would say that this is a toy that needs to be supervised whilst in use, you cannot leave them alone with it! The children love it when it works, but I have been very disappointed with it because of the amount of my time it takes up when in use.

a great buy :a must have, 27 Oct 2008
this game offers long hoyrs racing away with friends and family. Not for the first scalextric owner but the more experienced racer will thouroughly enjoy. high speed over taking is the main key attribute and that is the raeson i brought it and it doesn't diasppoint. my only critism is the durability of the cars. from the slightest skid or crash they show major signs of damage. on the whole, a great buy.

Scalextric Starter Kit, 19 Sep 2008
This is about the cheapest scalextric kit that you can buy and there is a good reason for it. It is because you cannot really do anything with it. It gives you a good feel for the dimensions of the cars and track and initiates the mouth-watering potential of the fun that can be had from racing scalextric's slot cars, but nothing else. I would recommend it as a starter kit if you intend to buy extra pieces of track and cars to expand the set, like I do, but if you want an out-of-the-box race system then I would suggest that you take a look at some of the other kits.

Promised so much ... delivered so little, 05 Jul 2008
What a great idea this, 4 cars racing on a 2 lane track and changing lanes!
Pity that the number of Digital enabled cars is very few, 3 came with this set - because thats all there is at the moment if you ignore the F1 cars.
Problem with the set is that the changeover pieces are terribly built, cheap and nasty! As this is what the set is bought for it makes the high price simply not worth paying!
The fault lies with how the changeovers work, they operate by a bent metal rod being pulled and pushed in an electric coil .... but, the cheap design means that the rods come adrift from the operating levers. This means that the switchovers stop working - all the time!
Pathetic quality and design ... wait until these teething troubles have been sorted out is my advice!
Best of the Digital Sets, 30 Dec 2007
Excellent set for the money. It does seem alot but remember what your getting!
This is the only set im aware of that has 2 lane changing areas. These pieces of track are about £15 on there own! most sets just come with the one change on a straight where as this has a change on the corner, perfect for some overtaking on the inside :). Great set!
The cars can take a beating but if you fly off into the fireplace surround a few times (as i have)i can see bits coming off. The wing on the aston martin has already come off :(
It worth mentioning that the lap counter that amazon has paired up with this set is NOT for use with digital Scalectrix sets... That counter is designed for normal (none digital) scalectrix sets and counts laps for each track, so if a car has changed lanes like they will in digital, (thats the idea...) the counter will get it wrong!
If you are buying ANY digital set, not just the super GT .. PLEASE DON'T BUY THIS LAP COUNTER!!!!! its very wrong of amazon to put this with the digital set..
there is a digital lap counter, sadly amazon dont seem to have it. Its in shops though and is around £40
hope this helps someone :)
Great fun but all the cars broke, 30 Dec 2007
This is by far the best Scalextric ever. It is great fun, only problem is within one day of having it, the spoilers on all cars borke off, wing mirrors, lights. Problem is the cars change change lanes and drive on the same lane, they can drive in opposite directions, its like bumpers cars and these can't take the beating that any kid would give this type of toy.

there is a digital lap counter, sadly amazon dont seem to have it. Its in shops though and is around £40
hope this helps someone :)
Great fun but all the cars broke, 30 Dec 2007
This is by far the best Scalextric ever. It is great fun, only problem is within one day of having it, the spoilers on all cars borke off, wing mirrors, lights. Problem is the cars change change lanes and drive on the same lane, they can drive in opposite directions, its like bumpers cars and these can't take the beating that any kid would give this type of toy.
shame it broke on first use!, 27 Dec 2007
Christmas day and my boys were chuffed to get this toy, then I set it up and all looked good and the kids loved it! Then, when I unplugged the handsets, the soldered end connectors snapped off and are now rattling about in the unit! Poorly manfactured handsets and a huge disappointment to my boys! I hanr returned it as it is now unusable.
Just generally a really great toy, 16 Oct 2007
We got this last christmas for some cousins (5 year old and 7 year old) and they absolutely adored the set. Surprisingly, it even had all the adults wanting a go on it as well! And just to clarify, this is not just a set that makes the cars go round and round, (i have experienced one of those, very boring.) the scalectrix simpsons set can alter the speed of the cars at your will, making it a matter of jugement how fast to go - too slow and your opponent is way ahead of you on the lap, but too fast and you fly off the track at the bend! Quite honestly, great fun and hours of entertainment.

Scalectrix minis, 25 May 2008
I found the set pretty durable. How much time the cars spend on track is down to your skill and co-ordination.
I think you have to accept that eventually cars will break but they are reasonably durable and the set has had a fair bit of use. I am still on the original cars but one has the top held on with a bit of tape. You can by replacement cars so do not panic.
My 4 year old is pretty good with it and we have had a lot of fun.
Great Fun, 29 Nov 2007
I was a bit concerned having read the first review so delighted to report that the set we've received has been a big hit with 7 and 10 year old boys. Unlike previous Scalextric sets we've had where the cars spend more time off the track than on it, the minis seem to grip the track really well and only spin off at ridiculously high speeds. Very pleased with it so far.
Very disappointed, 19 Nov 2007
We bought this for our 5 year olds birthday & it worked great the 1st time we used it. Since then the cars keep getting stuck and won't go properly. Only one car will work most of the time; not too fun!
The area where the track is raised up is very poorly designed, as it is held in the air by a cardboard support which doesn't attach properly.
We're taking it back to the shop, in the hope that we have a one-off that doesn't work properly. Overall a great disappointment.
